wilcoJay Bennett, the former guitar and keyboard player for the band Wilco is suing frontman Jeff Tweedy in a Chicago court for unpaid royalties.

Bennett was fired during the filming of the documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart eight years ago. His legal complaint claims that he is owed royalties from songs he recorded and co-wrote during his seven years with the band, as well as for proceeds from the documentary. Bennett alleges that he tried to collect from Tweedy but only received a few partial payments.

UPDATE 5/25/09: The papers are reporting that Jay Bennett died today after an extended illness. This does not necessarily mean the end of the lawsuit. His estate could continue the suit to collect unpaid royalties.
