Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has been indicted by a West Texas grand jury on drug and burglary charges, according to the Randall County district attorney’s office. Leaf, a 1998 first-round draft pick, had been accused of breaking into a Canyon, Texas, apartment on Oct. 30, 2008 and stealing a bottle of painkiller Hydrocodone.

The drug was being used by an injured player at West Texas A&M University, where Leaf was the quarterbacks coach before he resigned. Police said there were signs of forced entry.

Leaf is reportedly undergoing drug rehabilitation in British Columbia, Canada. The D.A. said efforts were being made to persuade Leaf to return to the United States on his own without the need for international extradition.

Leaf was a first-round pick by San Diego but flamed out of the league after four seasons with the Chargers and the Cowboys.
