Former Mets and Royals relief pitcher Ambiorix Burgos was sentenced today to nine months behind bars for beating his girlfriend in a Queens, NY hotel last September.
Burgos allegedly assaulted Maria Lopez after she tried to leave their room to go register her young daughter for school. Geez, the nerve of some women, huh?
Despite Burgos’ denial of the crime, a jury convicted him last month after only an hour of deliberations.
Burgos still faces charges in his native Dominican Republic for allegedly killing two women in his native Dominican Republic by running them over with his Hummer a few weeks after the Queens assault. He claims he wasn’t driving the vehicle, though prosecutors claim he was.
Before the Queens court appearance this week, Burgos and his lawyer submitted a letter from Burgos’ current wife – whom he married just last month – claiming the former Mets pitcher is a good husband. The endorsement didn’t seem to carry much weight with the judge.
Burgos pitched for the Royals in 2005 and 2006 and for the Mets in 2007, He sat out last season with an arm injury and is currently a free agent. Shocking.
